Learn to Play Rummy in a Few Simple Steps | Bicycle Cards Official Rules

Rummy is one of the most popular and engaging card games in the world, perfect for family game nights or casual fun with friends. Using a standard Bicycle deck, you can quickly learn this classic game of skill and strategy. Here’s everything you need to know to start playing Rummy today.

 Objective of the Game

Be the first player to get rid of all your cards by forming valid combinations called melds – either sets (three or four cards of the same rank) or runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit).

 What You’ll Need

  • A standard 52-card Bicycle deck

  • 2–6 players (ideal for 2–4)

  • Pen and paper for scoring

Basic Rummy Rules in 5 Simple Steps

Step 1: Deal the Cards

  • For 2 players: 10 cards each

  • For 3–4 players: 7 cards each

  • For 5–6 players: 6 cards each

Place the remaining cards face-down as the draw pile, then turn the top card face-up to start the discard pile.

Step 2: Start Your Turn

On your turn, you must:

  1. Draw one card from either the draw pile or the discard pile

  2. Meld if you can form valid sets or runs (optional during turn, but required to go out)

  3. Discard one card to the discard pile to end your turn

Step 3: Form Melds

Valid melds include:

  • Sets: 3–4 cards of same rank (e.g., 7♥, 7♣, 7♦)

  • Runs: 3+ consecutive cards of same suit (e.g., 4♠, 5♠, 6♠)

Step 4: Lay Off Cards

Once you've placed initial melds, you may add cards to:

  • Your own existing melds

  • Opponents' melds (on your turn only)

Step 5: Go Out and Win

To win a round:

  • Meld all your cards (except your final discard)

  • Call "Rummy!" when placing your last meld

  • Make sure your final card goes to tilerummy the discard pile
