In the modern Hearts card game, unlike its predecessor Reversis, each Heart card carries a penalty of 1 point.
Game Objective
The goal in Hearts is to finish with the fewest points by avoiding winning tricks that contain any Heart cards or the Queen of Spades
Card Values & Scoring
The game uses a standard 52-card deck. Here is the breakdown of the scoring cards:
| Card(s) | Point Value |
|---|---|
| Any Heart (♥) | 1 point each |
| Queen of Spades (Q♠) | 13 points |
| All other cards | 0 points |
A special rule called "Shoot the Moon" occurs if one player manages to win all 13 Hearts and the Queen of Spades. That player can then choose to either add 26 points to every other player's score or have 26 points deducted from their own score.
Gameplay Basics
The Deal: The game is typically played by 4 people, and each player is dealt 13 cards.
Passing Cards: Before each round begins, players pass 3 selected cards to an opponent. The passing direction usually rotates each round.
Starting Play: The player holding the 2 of Clubs (2♣) must lead the first trick with this card.
Following Suit: Players must follow the leading suit if they can. If they cannot, they may play any card, except they cannot play a Heart or the Queen of Spades on the first trick.
Breaking Hearts: Players cannot lead a trick with a Heart until a Heart has already been "played on another suit" in a previous trick (a moment known as "breaking hearts").
Winning the Game
The game ends when at least one player's cumulative score reaches or exceeds an agreed-upon total, often 100 points. The tilerummy player with the lowest score at that point wins
