According to the standard rules of Gin Rummy, each player receives 10 cards from a standard 52-card deck.
How Many Cards Are Dealt in Gin Rummy?
In Gin Rummy, the number of cards dealt depends on the number of players:
2 players: 10 cards each
3–4 players: 7 cards each
5–6 players: 6 cards each
A standard 52-card deck is used, without jokers. For games with 5 or more players, use two decks.
Setup & Dealing
Shuffle the deck and choose a dealer.
The dealer deals cards one at a time, starting to the left.
After dealing, place the remaining cards face down to form the stock pile.
Turn the top card face up beside the stock to begin the discard pile.
Objective
Form sets (three or four of a kind) or runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit) to reduce deadwood—the unmatched cards in your hand. Aces count as 1 point, face cards as 10, and all other cards at their face value.
Winning a Hand
Gin: Match all 10 cards into valid sets/runs. You score 25 bonus points plus the opponent’s deadwood total.
Knock: End the round when your deadwood points are 10 or less. If your deadwood is lower than your opponent’s, you score the difference.
The game continues over multiple rounds until one player reaches or exceeds 100 points.
